Is it irony that feminist Elizabeth Oakes Smith (1806-1893) published her books using her husband's name? Mrs. Seba Smith is renowned for her very early feminist writings (and should well be known for also raising six sons.) Riches Without Wings or The Cleveland Family is one of her earliest works and its moralist tale resulted from her own husband's loss of fortune due to speculation. Her background as an anonymous writer and editor for the Portland, Maine journal The Eastern Argus spurred her on to help support her household as a writer after the Panic of 1837. Although there are several "print-on-demand" options for this title, due to its perennial popularity, a true edition is difficult to find. This edition is in fair to good condition but is still a real prize.

Fellow New Jersyian Laura Schenone was nice enough to sign a few copies of the paperback editions of her book for me. If you aren't familiar with her work, check out her website and her blog. Good stuff! Here we have her first book, A Thousand Years Over a Hot Stove: A History of American Women Told Through Food, Recipes and Remembrances, won the 2004 James Beard Foundation Book Award for Food and Reference Writing. But don't let that scare you! This is an emminently readable and fascinating book and certainly a wonderful gift for the cook or feminist in your life. There are only a few copies left. They are new books and all are signed by Laura on the title page.
